Happy New Orleans Mardi Gras, everybody!
You have to see it to believe it!
An amazing Mardi Gras slideshow!
I kid you not; it really brings Arcana XX and XXI of the Voodoo Tarot of New Orleans to life, so give yourself a treat, and take yourself a little holiday down on the bayou... ;-))
Incorporating some pics of Sydney's gay and lesbian Mardi Gras... spot them! ;-))

Anyone know who invited me to join the group "Future Zen", and why? But I will bet it = someone from wyrd_crossings... And I do consider it a compliment, just as I found myself about to do the totally Zen thing, and step out for a bite to eat ;-))

Happy Mayan (Tzolkin) 'birthday' to me,
Happy Mayan (Tzolkin) 'birthday' to me!!
Funny how my Mayan 'birthday' comes back to back with Sebi's Red Magnetic Skywalker, don't you think? Also note that the cyber-Tarot I got today = the card of the Magician...
And Usch tells me that the echidna I dreamt, when threatened by a tram nazi about to bust me, in the ChaoStation lucid dream, where I woke up momentarily, with the anxiety of finding myself busted, and then 'remembered' to put myself back into the dream, turn into an echidna, roll myself into a ball and disappear to the point of invisibility under his very nose = a real 'animal fetch'! Not that I chose it, any more than I chose the dream-problem/anxiety, but it chose me, and so maybe this = my real astral eidolon (for this lunar month at least, while in medicine wheel!), rather than Davo, as previously thought ;-))

Z'Etoile, Voodoo Tarot of New Orleans, Red Magnetic Skywalker day!
The idea of "road" or "journey" I already associated with it in my own Tarot, i.e. - as one of the earliest I ever did - simply, and somewhat naively, the three Magi following the Star: dark blue (cellophane) night with the Star shining bright gold within it: to "travel hopefully" indeed seems better than "to arrive"! ;-))
For my card of this 'Gregorian year', 2006, I got the 9 of Swords - oh, joy, I thought, with the usual 'knee-jerk' reaction to this card! Quelle "annee de chienne" (=year of the bitch, pardon my French!) lol But, at least in the Voodoo Tarot, the 9 of Swords already seems connected to the Star, i.e. no matter how black and bleak the night appears, the angels (Masa) work busily at mediating our Star-connections, so, no matter how alone you feel, the universe actually takes care of you...!!! ;-))
Now, in this, also my personal card of today, we see the actual Star, close up and personal, so to speak. The Voodoo associates with it the meaning of "a clear road", i.e. you have a clear sense of where you go, and the faith, hope and inspiration to travel buoyantly along that road. This card shows the calabash or gourd containing the "destiny" of every one of us, written in the stars, you might say. Remember, that the journey of the earth itself = threefold: daily, on its own axis; yearly, around the sun; and also, at the same time, it moves steadily outward to some unknown 'destination' in space, with the universe, as the result of the Big Bang... You can also feel your "Star-connection" tingle at the top of your head, in your crown chakra, if you pay attention... like some sort of umbilical cord? The foetus looks very safe and secure and well-nurtured, in its snug little calabash of destiny, anyway... ;-))
(Red Magnetic Skywalker day in the Mayan calendar, also very appropriate...Not a particularly 'grounding' day, but rather uplifting and exhilarating - can also tend to insomnia, i.e. hyper-wakefulness, just due to the inspiring inrush of generally elevating thoughts, creating at least a hypo-manic mood: look to other cards around the 'Star' for grounding influences, i.e. 'lead boots', as needed, cos the Star = all 'rocket fuel', i.e. warp, speed, engage: we have lift-off!) ;-))

One for Ken ;-))
"In January 1827 Sir Walter Scott wrote in his diary: 'Called on Skene [the watercolourist...], to give him, for the Antiquarian Society, a heart, human apparently, stuck full of pins. It was found lying opposite to the threshold of an old tenement in [Dalkeith], a little below the surface; it is in perfect preservation.' It turned out to be a calf's heart; and is now in the Edinburgh Museum of Antiquities, mottled orangey brown, looking like a haggis with cloves stuck in it." - The Book of the Heart, Louisa Young (p. 228)
"Tamsin, the enchanted knight of Scots ballad (...) was loved by the Fairy Queen and when fair Janet won him back, the Queen cried:
"'If I had kent what I ken this night
If I had kent it yestreen,
I wad hae taen out thy heart of flesh
and put in a heart o' stane.'" (p.231)

My all-time favorite pic of Davo, aka. Hughesie, in case you wondered
Another cool picture of Davo, my male alter ego...
Hmm, Inana = Snow White? What do you think?
Inana and Shu-kale-tuda: translation
1-10The mistress who, having all the great divine powers, deserves the throne/dais; Inana, who, having all the great divine powers, occupies a holy throne/dais; Inana, who stands in E-ana as a source of wonder -- once, the young woman went up into the mountains, holy Inana went up into the mountains. To detect falsehood and justice, to inspect the Land closely, to identify the criminal against the just, she went up into the mountains. -- Now, what did one say to another? What further did one add to the other in detail?
11-14My lady stands among wild bulls at the foot of the mountains, she possesses fully the divine powers. Inana stands among stags in the mountain tops, she possesses fully the divine powers. -- Now, what did one say to another? What further did one add to the other in detail?
15-22Then Inana left heaven, left the earth and climbed up into the mountains. She left E-ana in Unug and climbed up into the mountains. She left the giguna in Zabalam and climbed up into the mountains. Now, what did one say to another? What further did one add to the other in detail?
42-58 Full of wisdom he (Enki) adds the following words: "Raven, I shall give you instructions. Pay attention to my instructions. Raven, in the shrine I shall give you instructions. Pay attention to my instructions. First, chop up (?) and chew (?) the kohl for the incantation priests of Eridug with the oil and water which are to be found in a lapis-lazuli bowl and are placed in the back-room of the shrine. Then plant them in a trench for leeks in a vegetable plot; then you should pull out (?) ......". -- Now, what did one say to another? What further did one add to the other in detail?
59-71The raven paid exact attention to the instructions of his master. It chopped up (?) and chewed (?) the kohl for the incantation priests of Eridug with the oil and water which were to be found in a lapis-lazuli bowl and were placed in the back-room of the shrine. It planted them in a trench for leeks in a vegetable plot; then it pulled out (?) ....... A plant growing in a plot like a leek, an oddity standing or sticking up like a leek stalk -- who had ever seen such a thing before? That a bird like the raven, performing the work of man, should make the counterweight blocks of the shadouf bump up and settle down; that it should make the counterweight blocks of the shadouf bump down and rise up -- who had ever seen such a thing before?
72-90Then the raven rose up from this oddity, and climbed up it -- a date palm! -- with a harness. It rubbed off the kohl (?) ...... which it had stuffed into its beak onto the pistils (?). ...... just as with a date palm, a tree growing forever -- who had ever seen such a thing before? Its scaly leaves surround its palmheart. Its dried palm-fronds serve as weaving material. Its shoots are like surveyor's gleaming line; they are fit for the king's fields. Its (?) branches are used in the king's palace for cleaning. Its dates, which are piled up near purified barley, are fit for the temples of the great gods. That a bird like the raven, performing the work of man, makes the counterweight blocks of the shadouf bump up and settle down; that it makes the counterweight blocks of the shadouf bump down and rise up -- who had ever seen such a thing before? At his master's command, the raven stepped into the abzu. -- Now, what did one say to another? What further did one add to the other in detail?
91-111...... Cu-kale-tuda was his name. ......, a son (?) of Igi-sigsig, the ......, was to water garden plots and build the installation for a well among the plants, but not a single plant remained there, not even one: he had pulled them out by their roots and destroyed them. Then what did the stormwind bring? It blew the dust of the mountains into his eyes. When he tried to wipe the corner of his eyes with his hand, he got some of it out, but was not able to get all of it out. He raised his eyes to the lower land and saw the exalted gods of the land where the sun rises. He raised his eyes to the highlands and saw the exalted gods of the land where the sun sets. He saw a solitary ghost. He recognised a solitary god by her appearance. He saw someone who fully possesses the divine powers. He was looking at someone whose destiny was decided by the gods. In that plot -- had he not approached it five or ten times before? -- there stood a single shady tree at that place. The shady tree was a Euphrates poplar with broad shade. Its shade was not diminished in the morning, and it did not change either at midday or in the evening.
112-128Once, after my lady had gone around the heavens, after she had gone around the earth, after Inana had gone around the heavens, after she had gone around the earth, after she had gone around Elam and Subir, after she had gone around the intertwined horizon of heaven, the mistress became so tired that when she arrived there she lay down by its roots. Cu-kale-tuda noticed her from beside his plot. Inana ...... the loincloth (?) of the seven divine powers over her genitals. ...... the girdle of the seven divine powers over her genitals ....... with the shepherd Ama-ucumgal-ana ....... over her holy genitals ....... Cu-kale-tuda undid the loincloth (?) of seven divine powers and got her to lie down in her resting place. He had intercourse with her and kissed her there. After he had had intercourse with her and kissed her, he went back to beside his plot. When day had broken and Utu had risen, the woman inspected herself closely, holy Inana inspected herself closely.
129-138Then the woman was considering what should be destroyed because of her genitals; Inana was considering what should be done because of her genitals. She filled the wells of the Land with blood, so it was blood that the irrigated orchards of the Land yielded, it was blood that the slave who went to collect firewood drank, it was blood that the slavegirl who went out to draw water drew, and it was blood that the black-headed people drank. No one knew when this would end. She said: "I will search everywhere for the man who had intercourse with me". But nowhere in all the lands could she find the man who had had intercourse with her. -- Now, what did one say to another? What further did one add to the other in detail?
139-159The boy went home to his father and spoke to him; Cu-kale-tuda went home to his father and spoke to him: "My father, I was to water garden plots and build the installation for a well among the plants, but not a single plant remained there, not even one: I had pulled them out by their roots and destroyed them. Then what did the stormwind bring? It blew the dust of the mountains into my eyes. When I tried to wipe the corner of my eyes with my hand, I got some of it out, but was not able to get all of it out. I raised my eyes to the lower land, and saw the high gods of the land where the sun rises. I raised my eyes to the highlands, and saw the exalted gods of the land where the sun sets. I saw a solitary ghost. I recognised a solitary god by her appearance. I saw someone who possesses fully the divine powers. I was looking at someone whose destiny was decided by the gods. In that plot -- had I not approached it five or ten, three or six hundred, times before? -- there stood a single shady tree at that place. The shady tree was a Euphrates poplar with broad shade. Its shade was not diminished in the morning, and it did not change either at midday or in the evening..."
177-184His father replied to the boy; his father replied to Cu-kale-tuda: "My son, you should join the city-dwellers, your brothers. Go at once to the black-headed people, your brothers! Then this woman will not find you among the mountains." He joined the city-dwellers, his brothers all together. He went at once to the black-headed people, his brothers, and the woman did not find him among the mountains.
185-193Then the woman was considering a second time what should be destroyed because of her genitals; Inana was considering what should be done because of her genitals. She mounted on a cloud, took (?) her seat there and ....... The south wind and a fearsome storm flood went before her. The pilipili (one of the cultic personnel in Inana's entourage) and a dust storm followed her. Abba-cucu, Inim-kur-dugdug, ...... adviser ....... Seven times seven helpers (?) stood beside her in the high desert. She said: "I will search everywhere for the man who had intercourse with me". But nowhere could she find the man who had intercourse with her.
214-220Then the woman was considering a third time what should be destroyed because of her genitals; Inana was considering what should be done because of her genitals. She took a single ...... in her hand. She blocked the highways of the Land with it. Because of her, the black-headed people ....... She said: "I will search everywhere for the man who had intercourse with me". But nowhere could she find the man who had intercourse with her.
221-230The boy went home to his father and spoke to him...
239-255When day had broken and Utu had risen, the women inspected herself closely, holy Inana inspected herself closely. "Ah, who will compensate me? Ah, who will pay (?) for what happened to me? Should it not be the concern of my own father, Enki?" Holy Inana directed her steps to the abzu of Eridug and, because of this, prostrated herself on the ground before him and stretched out her hands to him: "Father Enki, I should be compensated! What's more, someone should pay (?) for what happened to me! I shall only re-enter my shrine E-ana satisfied after you have handed over that man to me from the abzu." Enki said "All right!" to her. He said "So be it!" to her. With that holy Inana went out from the abzu of Eridug. She stretched herself like a rainbow across the sky and reached thereby as far as the earth. She let the south wind pass across, she let the north wind pass across. From fear, solitary Cu-kale-tuda tried to make himself as tiny as possible, but the woman had found him among the mountains.
256-261Holy Inana now spoke to Cu-kale-tuda: "How ......? ...... dog ......! ...... ass ......! ...... pig ......!"
262-281Cu-kale-tuda replied to holy Inana: "My lady (?), I was to water garden plots and build the installation for a well among the plants, but not a single plant remained there, not even one: I had pulled them out by their roots and destroyed them..."
290-310When he had spoken thus to her, She (?) determined his destiny ......, holy Inana spoke to Cu-kale-tuda: "So! You shall die! What is that to me? Your name, however, shall not be forgotten. Your name shall exist in songs and make the songs sweet. A young singer shall perform them most pleasingly in the king's palace. A shepherd shall sing them sweetly as he tumbles his butter-churn. A young shepherd shall carry your name to where he grazes the sheep. The palace of the desert shall be your home." Cu-kale-tuda ......Because ...... destiny was determined, praise be to ...... Inana!

Swords cards always = a challenge to change our thinking on an aspect of our lives. 5 of Swords in particular means to recognise when we fight a losing battle, and stop banging our heads against a brick wall, trying to achieve the unachievable (sure, magic aims to stretch the boundaries of achievable reality, but there still exist such boundaries, however widened!)
Crowley deck also makes a nice change from the usual facade.com decks...thanks, Aidan! ;-))

Full moon over the Orkneys...
...courtesy of Ken's blog, for us all, especially wyrdlings, to have a good howl at this full moon? Or alternatively, you can just visit his blog directly, and wander around among all the standing stones yourself...
Night before last, woke from a strange dream, of which I can only recall a fragment: a policeman came to arrest for doing chalk pavement art outside Sacred Heart church; hmm, now seems the time of karmic 'judgement' and reaping what I have sown, good and bad? Some good (Sacred Heart 'owes' me?), most of the rest shit? ;-P

On the Wisdom of Banning Images (very topical)
"He sat at the edge, carving, shaping, sculpting, but he realised the marble was not turning out to be ample and motherly. It was taking on the shape of a young woman. The hair he had intended to resemble the style of the ancient donii [goddesses] he had given away - a ridged form covering the face as well as the back - was suggestive of braids, tight braids all over the head, except for the face. The face was blank. No face was ever carved on a donii: who could bear to look on the face of the Mother? Who could know it? She was all women, and none.
"If I could draw her to me, overcome her resistance and capture her spirit?
"Capture her spirit?
"(...)Why did they engrave the image of an animal on a weapon, or on the Sacred Walls? To approach the Mother-Spirit of it, to overcome her resistance and capture the essence.
"Don't be ridiculous, Jondalar. You can't capture Ayla's spirit that way. It wouldn't be right, no one puts a face on a donii. Humans were never pictured - a likeness might capture a spirit's essence. But to whom would it be captive?
"No one should hold another person's spirit captive. Give the donii to her! She'd have the spirit back then, wouldn't she? If you just kept it for a little while, then gave it to her... afterwards.
"If you put her face on it, would it turn her into a donii? You almost think she is one, with her healing, and her magic way with animals. If she's a donii, she might decide to capture your spirit. Would that be so bad?
"You want a piece to stay with you, Jondalar. The piece of the spirit that always stays in the hands of the maker [my italics!]. " (Valley of the Horses, pp. 540-2).
In the light of the recent global crisis, there seems a certain wisdom to the Islamic ban on images after all, especially of the sacred, as a way of honoring the sacred, by respecting its spirit and allowing it to remain sacred, by not trying to 'capture its spirit'. Much as Christian art started off western art by supposedly 'glorifying the spirit', it has also ended up all too often just with parodies, spoofs and silly caricatures and send-ups, that don't even seem very funny ;-P

The Sixth Sense
I think you already know The Sixth Sense equates to one of my all-time, very best, favorite movies from my profile. Haley Joel Osment works his usual screen magic, as in Artificial Intelligence, and, as a review in the psych. students' journal of the university of Bergen put it, "Bruce Willis acts for once as if he has both a brain and a heart!" But click on the link if you wish to get an idea of how the religious and spiritual symbolism in it has also struck other people; sorry if some of these seem also Christian fundamentalists, but such a deeply spiritual movie as this has to strike a profound chord with all sorts of 'believers'! I found through my google search of images to accompany this movie, many amusing spoofs and send-ups of what has probably become the most parodied movie line ever: "I see dead people." But I refuse to trivialise the movie by depicting any of them here. This movie tips any thinking, feeling person over the edge from agnosticism about any sort of afterlife to some sort of belief... Belief also in honesty and integrity, love and communication in relationships, between counsellor and client, mother and son, husband and wife (without 'spoiling' the stunning ending in any way, shape or form)! Thank you, M. Night Shyamalan!
And speaking of "seeing dead people", I don't really "get" last night's dreams, except that, at first, I thought last night's attempted astral working had succeeded, and I found myself chatting lovingly and sensibly with Bjorn Erik, and then it 'spun out' somehow, and I no longer knew exactly what had happened, but there seemed a generally nightmarish and disturbing quality to the whole thing, in particular one weird 'vision' I cannot even begin to describe, but all I can figure seems that as per yesterday's cards of the Devil + 7 of Wands + Chariot (Dance) in the Voodoo Tarot, Bjorn Erik has "crossed over" and entered the spirit world even while still apparently physically alive (it happens, you know!) , and I got some sort of confused glimpse of the state of mind in which he finds himself (not good), but then I wake up, and see today's card of the 7 of Cups, and think, "That might possibly all amount to complete bull..." But the gist of it rings true, somehow ;-P
International approaches to reducing deliberately lit fires
I am a Doctor of Clinical Psychology student from the University of Auckland, New Zealand. My supervisor is Dr Ian Lambie, Director of the Clinical Psychology programme.
We are working on a research project sponsored by the New Zealand Fire Service. We are primarily interested in the implementation and operation of treatment for people who deliberately light fires. Treatment can take place within a specific firesetting related programme or be conducted by clinicians individually as part of their overall case load. I have attached a letter providing more detail about the study.
At this stage I am trying to identify potential participants within Australia - programmes or clinicians with experience treating people who have deliberately lit fires.
Can you help? Are you able to pass on my letter to your members or post it on your website?
By all means pass on my details to any individual or organisation that may be relevant.
Thank you for your time. I look forward to hearing from you.

reading from the French Cartomancy book of Madame Lenormand
Note similarities of images to those on Titania's Fortune cards: I suspect this deck to equate to the "ancestor" or direct source of Titania's ;-))
February. 31 Sun
the work and business front is animated with important changes. Reassuring news from afar. Advantageous contracts. Appetizing business proposals.

Pluto - just a pup?
>"Tenth Planet" Larger Than Pluto, Study Confirms
>for National Geographic News
>February 1, 2006
>Scientists have measured the size of a solar system object discovered
>last year and confirmed that it is larger than Pluto.
>The icy object, called 2003 UB313, is located in the far reaches of
>the solar system. It measures 1,900 miles (3,000 kilometers) in
>diameter. Pluto, by contrast, measures 1,400 miles (2,300 kilometers).
>The finding has fueled the debate over what constitutes a planet.
>Pluto is traditionally considered the ninth planet in our solar system
>(see interactive map).
>Some scientists argue that 2003 UB313 should now be considered the
>tenth planet of our solar system. Others say Pluto's status as a
>planet should be reconsidered.
>"Since UB313 is decidedly larger than Pluto, it is now increasingly
>hard to justify calling Pluto a planet if UB313 is not also given this
>status," said Frank Bertoldi, an astronomer at the University of Bonn
>and Max Planck Institute for Radioastronomy in Germany.
>Bertoldi led the study, which will be reported in tomorrow's issue of
>the journal Nature.
Valentine's Day this year marks a very special celebration due to the numerology represented by the year itself; 2006. This is an "8" year, marking a definite beginning and ending to affairs of the heart, no more beating around the bush, it's either on or off the dilly dally is over. Have no fear. Pluto is there to help you through this uncharted territory, of course. As the natural ruler of the 8th house, Pluto takes hold globally, we are sure to see some significant and life altering changes that will indeed have a major and favorable effect on our economy. Remember, the 8th house rules other people's money and how that affects your life will be seen this year, more so than all the years since the beginning of this century. And because this is an "8" year, individually you will notice a more abundant personal and partnership cashflow. The 8th house also rules spousal income and becomes especially potent after Venus goes direct on February 3rd. A grand partnership celebration of blessed finances, as a whole, will be realized by most couples this year -- a mutually good time to invest wisely in your partnership and financial future.
Actually, Pluto transits my 10th house, Neptune my 8th; so, geez, this Astro.Daija talks a lot of astrological tripe ;-P

annee de chienne (=year of the bitch), or hopefully not!
Our Personal "Towers"/disasters, natural and otherwise ;-P
Brightest Lammas/Imbolc blessings, everybody (for what that seems worth, coming from me, at the moment)! ;-P
OK, I admit it; I do feel a bit (uncharacteristically) depressed - after two nights' disturbed sleep, especially last night, waking at the 'ungodly' 4 am and unable to go back to sleep, I can no longer deny it, and seriously question how well I will function today... ;-P
In those 'ungodly' dark hours, I found myself thinking a lot about disasters, natural and otherwise. Disasters we have known, personally.
You routinely have your storms and earthquakes on the west coast of the USA, from California to Oregon, and yet choose to remain there (some would call this foolhardy!). They routinely have floods and hurricanes in New Orleans, and yet some may choose to return to live there, as we speak (I don't know... anyone know about the New Orleans situation?) ;-P
Every once in a while, I manage to switch off my natural 'speaking' function, and engage brain in 'listening' mode; some naturally make good counsellors, i.e. good listeners, while others of us have to make more of a conscious effort to set aside our personal agendas, to genuinely focus on the client: I belong to the latter category. Hopefully, this does not make me less worthy a 'counsellor' than the more 'natural' kind. Yesterday, I managed to abruptly switch off my habitual flow of verbal diarrhoea and listen to Peter, a fellow worker at Gawith, and sidereal Aries, who faced the storms and bushfires in Kinglake last week. His story - of his own personal "Tower"/disaster experience interested me very greatly. Unlike those Americans who choose to stay in, or return to, their own personal disaster zones, Peter said it now seemed "on the cards" that he and Serena, his wife, and another fellow worker, would sell up and not return; he pronounced the old Aussie "hippie dream" of living in the bush and commuting daily to the city to work now officially dead, in his case, with characteristic Aussie laconic dryness. He just found it all too scary, first battling the actual fires, then the torrential rains, which at first did not help, and only ignited several smaller spot-fires, with the lightning! He also wants to see the re-introduction of capital punishment for arsonists, since most of the major fires appeared deliberately lit, and one has to wonder at the mentality of those so-called "people" who would deliberately do something like that (makes you ashamed to belong to the same species, actually! ;-P)
The "Tower"/disaster experience takes many forms, and we respond to it in many and varied ways, according to our personalities, nationalities, upbringings etc. A lot of it seems to involve the destruction of personal hopes and dreams in particular, which seems the bit that really hurts; *if you want to give God a laugh, tell him your plans*, as Mike Scott put it, which I had myself as an online signature for a while, i.e. the world can seem a very cruel and unforgiving place, ruled by cruel and mocking gods, if any - and you don't even have to identify yourself as a 'gnostic' to feel that! ;-P
I currently experience my own "Tower", but not so much in the sense of the "Deluge" (the New Orleans hurricane and flooding of the Mississippi, as in the Voodoo Tarot), more in the sense of the "Holocaust" of the Secret Dakini Oracle, i.e. the imminent ending of my dream of continuing my tenuous connection with Bjorn Erik, chronically locked up in Norway. This seems to have taken the form of a more long-drawn-out, quasi-NDE (shamanic experience?) and classic "midlife crisis", after which nothing in one's life can ever seem the same again. Indeed, my life has become unrecognisable from what it seemed before.
There seem also possibilities of "enlightenment" or "awakening" with the Sturm and Drang of this experience... I only hope to God/dess we all find them ;-P
