The Lover: which lover do you sigh for, o beloved? For truly love seems blind, as it strikes the plangent notes on its lute, the lute of this not-so-merry troubadour. Every lover comes to weep, for it knows not in truth the one whom in truth it truly loves: we all seem blindfolded by the masks of our adult projections. Who equates to the Hidden Beloved, if not the eternal Mother, Isis, the Virgin Mary, the feminine aspect of the Holy Trinity? Like the Fool, as the Lover, you wear your heart on your sleeve, greasepaint on your Pierrot-face, also like the so-called Devil, remember? All three wear their hearts on their sleeve: "what I have written, I have written" (Pilate). The Lover seems blinded because the true Beloved remains necessarily veiled from our sight, or we would blind ourselves (yes, Freud happened on something here!). Every beloved we cry for represents the mummy, or the daddy; where have you hidden, o mummy (or daddy)? "Why have you wounded my soul?" (John of the Cross). Jung also made a good point, when he said that every love-relationship involves four partners: 'he', 'she', the anima and the animus. "Will you, won't you, will you, won't you, won't you join the dance?" (Mock Lobster quadrille, Lewis Carroll). Only in death does the sorrowing Madonna get to hold her dead son in her lap once again, and cover him with kisses...

A very interesting analysis of the "Lovers" card.

While I certainly agree with what you say. it seems a rather sombre note to end your analysis on with the comment about 'the sorrowing Madonna getting to cover her son in kisses' only in death.

Obviously we all aim to enjoy the emotion of love, rather than analyzing it mentally, don't we. I think it's important to come out of the head and into the heart sometimes. Perhaps an analysis of a tarot card isn't the place to do it, but then the "Lovers" card is all about choices, isn't it ?

At the time when I did it (one of my earlier cards), the Lovers equated to the (unrequited) Lover...what do you expect?
